Sunday April 27th – Regenerative Biochar: Demonstration, Workshop and Movie event – was held at the Seven Acre Dairy in Paoli,. This was jointly offered by the South Central, Dane County, Kenosha/Jefferson/Racine & Walworth WFU chapters.

There we were educated by DNR’s Brian Zweifel and  biochar champion Alex Tanke. These folks brought their kilns to explain the importance and workings. Showing how both styles and sizes – larger circumference and lower sides/ smaller circumference and higher sides; sealed bottom, less portable/ open bottom and able to roll to site –  were of value depending on what you are hoping to accomplish.  We watched as Brian fed the kiln with wood and as it burned down to a charcoal-like state. It was explained how valuable biochar can be to ground and water.  Working as a charging element to fortify other components in soil as well as acting as a sponge removing harmful pollutants in water.

From the demonstration, we went inside the Dairy for a Q & A session. Following this, the movie  “The Need to Grow” was shown.  Many stayed and viewed this production from Earth Conscious Films. Attendees proceeded to stir up much conversation.

There were 37 in attendance. And, yes, we had treats provided by Seven Acres Dairy. Yum!  Some came before and enjoyed lunch, some stayed afterwards for dinner as well.
